The first thing you have to consider when you are deciding
to build your own rain garden is where to build it. A good location would be
somewhere that rainwater runoff naturally occurs, for example roof runoff. You
will also want to have your garden 10 feet from you house to avoid moisture
issues, and 25 feet from septic systems. A few other things to keep in mind is
where water from the garden will overflow during heavy rain, placing your
garden away from areas where water currently ponds and also avoid placing it
under trees to prevent conflicts with roots.
The next step is actually creating your rain garden. Generally
they are 100 to 300 square feet. First you must determine the drainage area and
then conduct a drainage test. Next determine the garden depth depending on the
type of soil and the water absorption.
After all of this you are finally ready to dig and then
plant the garden.
